After first hearing ‘This English Life‘ I must say I was desperately waiting to listen of The Chapman Families new EP ‘Cruel Britannia‘. (Cruel Britannia release news)
Now I have heard it what can I say? Its amazing, everything I wanted it to be and more!
Lets go back in time a bit, I was introduced to The Chapman Family when I saw them live at and they were immense, deafening loud, hit you in the chest with a wall of noise and distortion, produced general chaos and then Kingsley tried to asphyxiate himself with a microphone cable. What more can you ask for? Not much really!
I went straight home and brought ‘Burn you Town’and despite liking the album very much I couldn’t help but feel the production of the album didn’t fully capture The Chapman Family persona I had witnessed live, I am very happy to say there is no issue with that here, the sound of this EP is….. RAW!!!
The sound of the EP is a lot fuller and bulked out, again much like their live shows. There is no moment when there is no noise! There is fat distorted bass, wall of noise guitar riffs, huge drum beats, ambient noise and the addition of keyboards works very well.
Kinglsey again sings his very lyrics very poignantly, aggressively and at times a fragile manner.
This is all pretty dark stuff but it is very refreshing to hear a band have something to say about matters that affect us all and our country rather than merrily amble along singing your usual indie generic bollocks.
These lads have something to say and they want you to listen.
Roll on 18th June when we can all get our hands on this beauty!!!!
