I wish I could lay claim to discovering this band by wandering into the small BBC Introducing tent, to escape the mud, at last years Glastonbury - alas that is how my friend, who told me about them, discovered Two Wounded Birds.
Hailing from Margate, Kent, they list their influences as including: The Beach Boys, The Smiths, The Doors and The Cure (to name but a few). Although not directly sounding like any band in particular you can see where their influences have helped when song writing. The beautifully pop driven Be With You has a definite tinge of The Beach Boys, you are whisked away to a surfers paradise somewhere far away from Margate, while the track, My Lonesome has echoes of The Doors – moody, sultry but powerful. The latter is most similar to what is, in my option, their best track;Nightpatrol.
At first listen you believe Nightpatrol to be a dark, sinister, lonely track After listening again you realise it is actually hiding a romantic side and it’s lyrics are what let its secret out, the tremolo guitar with extra reverb seems to only add to the mystery.
With such a varied set of tracks showcasing their talent anticipation is building about what will be next and with their debut album out June 4th we won’t have to wait long to find out.
